Campus Technology had an article about the future of college classrooms called Incubating Next-Gen.edu. They highlighted the University of California-Riverside in their re-thinking the college classroom.
I think that the keywords are flexible and chaos... which is perfect for Millennial students!!! This chaos and flexibility helps students stay focused on the instructor and course material.
The "flex classrooms" include "wraparound whiteboards, movable tables and chairs, and dual projection systems with multiple points of control." Students will be facing many different directions yet they will all be able to view a screen.
The chaos is because instructors and students both have the ability to present info and make changes to the displays on the screens/and/or white boards in the room. This visual eye-candy is just the stimulating chaos that Millennials need to divert attention from their incoming text messages, instant messages, and Facebook! These tech disturbances bug instructors because students are not paying attention to their instruction. The classroom technology improvements can help divert this attention back to the college course.
